MP calls for action on ’causes of debt crisis’

Ms Willott raised her concerns in response to the criticism from Citizen’s Advice of government proposals to increase the powers of bailiffs to enter the premises of people in loan or credit card debt.

More should be done to promote financial awareness through education and legislation should be introduced to target “unethical” credit lenders and loan companies, Ms Willott went on to suggest.

“The growing debt crisis in the UK is not sustainable and the government has done nowhere near enough to manage it,” commented the Welsh MP.

“I am very worried about the prospect of giving bailiffs new powers, particularly the power to force entry or restrain people,” she added.

Citizens Advice warned that the proposed tribunals, courts and enforcement bill, which was recently put before parliament, would make those Brits looking of a debt solution more vulnerable to unscrupulous money lenders.
