Cost effective community…or not?

In the effort to cut our costs at the same time  as “going green” we’re all trying to do our bit, now more than ever.  And with the recession to make us forever money conscious, and disaster movies such as 2012 to remind us time is running out, commuting to work, for many, is a chance to kill two birds with one stone – not a nice saying I know, but couldn’t think of any others!

Despite this, although the environment might be better off for the commute, our pockets, will be less so! It seems that our rail fares have more than doubled in the last year and with the best efforts of everyone, this is highly likely to cause many to backtrack back to their cars for their daily commute to work!

A news report this week demonstrated the dramatic rise of rail costs by showing that a ticket across Britain from Newquay to Kyle of Lochlash and back again would cost you a staggering £1000 in comparison to the £486 it cost a year ago.

UK’s transport fares top the list against any other country in Europe, so surely it’s time the government tackled this issue properly?

It’s the age old debate of asking people to pay more to commute, in order to do good for the environment, but in a recession, where everyone is counting their pennies, surely there’s room for compromise on this?  Come on now?!

Let me know how you get to work and what your weekly / monthly travel costs are?
