Men called Brian have the best credit ratings in the UK, according to a new study.

Price comparison site Confused found those with this name happen to be best at maintaining their credit rating, something regular payments and the avoidance of blips like going over an overdraft limit can achieve.

Those with credit card debt must make sure they at least manage their minimum payments – but paying off more is better.

While those living the life of Brian can look on the bright side, Helens also do very well.

However, those named Daniel or Lisa are most prone to having low credit scores.

The study also found that those with the surname Edwards have the best profiles, with Thompsons doing worst.

Postcodes are also subject to variation when it comes to credit scores, with the best in SL4 (Slough), followed by GU34 (Guildford) and M33 (Manchester), while the worst are in SA1 (Swansea), B37 (Birmingham) and TQ2 (Torquay).

Head of credit cards at the website Nerys Lewis noted that actual names are not themselves a factor in credit scoring.

She advised: "We would encourage people to think about their credit history as a good or bad score can have a number of implications, such as your likelihood of acceptance for credit cards and also loans and mortgages."

The study also showed credit scores tend to get better as people get older. While this may be partly because a credit history can build up over time and people may be settled in one address for longer periods of time, it could also be a result of lessons being learned by those who have made mistakes in their younger years.

Having a good enough credit score to get a mortgage could save money, as a recent study by Halifax has revealed the average monthly rent is £130 more than a mortgage.
