Fresh help for students in debt

Apacs is distributing leaflets that provide a “wealth of information”, including tips on financial management, fraud protection and a list of questions to ask before taking out a credit card.

“Nowadays, most students expect to be in debt when they graduate and whilst it might be impossible to avoid student loan debt, getting a handle on managing your finances can make the world of difference,” said Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs.

According to the association, nearly a quarter of students have a credit card but are concerned about the debt issues that holding one raises.

Ms Quinn stated that the lending industry had an “important role to play” in educating consumers about responsible borrowing and the risks of using credit cards.

The move to distribute advice on becoming debt free by Apacs comes as the industry comes under fire for its promotion of responsible lending.
