Consumers urged to be vigilant in fight against fraud

Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax, has urged the public to remain vigilant against ID theft, a problem which can make life more difficult for the thousands of people facing debt management problems and looking to avoid bankruptcy.

Getting access to credit file records from Britain’s credit reference agencies is the first step consumers should take if they are concerned that their financial details may have been accessed illegally, Mr Munroe makes clear.

The reality of the matter is that ID fraud has become an immensely sophisticated – and lucrative – crime,” he continued.

“And the only real defence for an individual is going to be greater vigilance themselves.”

National Debtline spokesperson Beccy Wilks recently asserted that the UK’s money lenders should take a greater responsibility for the number of people around the country who face serious debt management problems.
