Water debt action ‘needed’
Sir James Perowne, chairman of the Consumer Council for Water Midlands, said that this sum is a 6.5 per cent increase in debt more than 12 months old compared to last year.
“This news is not surprising, particularly as household bills have increased. Finding the money to pay for all of the utility bills can be difficult and some bills get ignored or put on hold for a lengthy time,” Sir James said.
Figures come from water regulator Ofwat and show the effects that increasing bills are having on consumers.
However, Sir James urged consumers to take debt management to ensure that they do not slip behind on repayments.
“People should not suffer in silence. If they are in difficulties they should contact their water company as soon possible. By acting now there is a better chance that a payment plan can be agreed,” he stated.
