Young people ‘worried about money’

Youngsters across the UK are worried about money and would like personal finance lessons, according to research.

A survey of 1,001 young people found that just under half (43 per cent) worried about personal finance, BBC News reports.

As a result the Department of Education says it is considering making finance lessons mandatory.

The study was commissioned by the National Children's Bureau and Personal Finance Education Group and found that nearly one in eight (12 per cent) had borrowed money from family they couldn't afford to repay.

This research has been released to mark the launch of Our Money, Our Future, which is a toolkit developed by youngsters to help campaign for personal finance education to be taught in schools.

Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education for Young People Justin Tomlinson said: "Personal finance education has never been more important and I am delighted that young people will now have the tools to enable them to launch their own local campaign."
