More advice should be given to new parents to prevent them needing debt help, an expert has claimed.
David Rodger, managing director of the Debt Advice Foundation, was speaking after research by uSwitch.com discovered one-in-ten mothers are going back to work early because they cannot afford to stay off any longer.
He remarked very often people are not prepared for the financial difficulties that occur when entering parenthood.
“If action could be taken early to help parents avoid debt and learn to cope financially this would make a genuine difference,” the specialist remarked.
An increasing number of 25 to 34-year-olds need assistance with their arrears as they struggle with the economic impacts of having children.
He added the change in circumstances that accompanies parenthood can often throw people.
One suggestion he believes could make a difference is for antenatal classes to include a session on how to budget for a newborn baby.
