People who are using the internet to buy products need to make sure they are careful.

This is because research by the UK Card Association discovered online banking fraud losses totalled £24.9 million in January to June 2010.

Those who were scammed during this period may find they are facing debt worries as a result.

It also found total losses as a result of deception during the same time period stood at £186.8 million.

Jennifer Perry, an internet expert and founder of E-Victims.org, noted there are a number of reasons why the issue of web-based scamming is not being tackled properly.

"You need to be aware of who you're buying from. The scammers always have the best price. People go for the lowest price, they … forget to look for the clues," she added.

Britons who lose money in this manner may live to regret their decision to buy the objects in the first place.

It has been suggested that one way to protect yourself when shopping online is to use a pre paid card which is only topped up with the specific amount you wish to spend online.
