The nature of the economy at the moment has been described as unstable, which could lead to debt difficulty for many.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable made the remark in response to Office for National Statistics figures that showed the number of people who are unemployed in the UK to have risen by 43,000 during the three months leading to February.

The overall number of jobless Britons now stands at 2.5 million.

Of the statistics, Mr Cable said: “It underlines just how fragile the UK economy is and exposes the folly of Tory plans to pull the rug from under the recovery.”

He added that a strong and concerted plan is required to support jobs and businesses to prevent the fallout from the recession remaining for many more years.

Vince Cable joined the Liberal Democrat shadow cabinet in October 1999, has been the shadow chancellor for the party since 2003 and is currently deputy leader.
