Individuals may be facing eviction and possibly even bankruptcy as they struggle to pay their rent in full, newly-released figures have shown.

The data comes from the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) and it found that 50.9 per cent of all people who sought help with their debts last year where leasing a property.

While those who needed assistance with their arrears have traditionally been able to make their rent payments, there has been an increase in those who can no longer do this, it was claimed.

Laura Carver, CCCS helpline manager, noted she has been left “surprised” by the number of renters getting in contact.

“The personal finance situation for those in rented accommodation is deteriorating to the extent that they many end up homeless,” she added.

Her comments came after Peter Vicary-Smith, chief executive of Which?, observed banks have been guilty of giving their customers “unsuitable financial advice” and urgent measures have to be taken.
