A number of people may be lying in regards to their motor insurance in an effort to reduce debt concerns, new statistics have suggested.

Research carried out by Confused.com found 38 per cent of motorists in the UK have admitted stretching the truth to obtain cheaper cover.

It showed almost half of men (46 per cent) have fibbed to get a better premium, while almost a third (32 per cent) of women have also told lies for financial gain.

The most common deception concerns annual mileage, with 14 per cent of the survey’s respondents admitting to lying in regards to how many miles their motors have clocked up.

A further eight per cent bend the truth when revealing where they keep their vehicles parked, while an additional seven per cent lie about the valuation of their car.

Moreover, five per cent admitted to adding a motorist on to their policy who is likely to never drive their motor.

And it appears most individuals fib for financial motivations.

The investigation discovered 71 per cent of those who lie do so because they wish to save money, while 12 per cent consider it worth the risk of having to pay a fee in the event of a crash if it means they can keep their premium at a reduced level.

Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at the website, warned: “By failing to tell the insurance provider your true circumstances, you are risking invalidating your cover entirely.”

The Association of British Insurers recently revealed people in Britain make in excess of 2,300 fraudulent insurance claims every week.
