Individuals in the UK could be flirting with debt difficulties by continually withdrawing money from cash machines.

New figures released by Link, the operator of such transactions, have shown that the May Day weekend witnessed record numbers of people using the dispensers.

With consumers drawing out around £590 million, Friday April 30th was the busiest ever day for the machines.

It surpassed the previous record by £25 million, which was set on Christmas Eve in 2009.

By the end of the bank holiday weekend, more than £1.5 billion had been taken out, which was nine per cent more than the same period last year.

Edwin Schooling Latter, managing director of the Link Scheme, said: “Cash machine usage continues to grow, with new records for cash dispensed set this weekend.”

Statistics recently released by Moneysupermarket Vouchers revealed an increasing number of Britons are using discount tokens to purchase goods, with over 2.4 million people utilising the payment method each day.
