Wrong bills ‘adding to debt woes’

Thousands of British families have seen their debt management problems worsen as a result of being issued with the wrong bill by their service providers, it has been suggested.

Over the course of the past 12 months, almost a third of all Britons have spotted a mistake on a bill they have received but many let these mistakes slip by them because they pay the charges off via direct debit.

The problem could be adding to the financial problems of families that are already extremely stretched as a result of increasing living costs and struggles in becoming debt free, according to Moneysupermarket.com.

“Worryingly there are millions of people who still don’t check their bills,” said Rob Barnes, head of broadband and mobiles at Moneysupermarket.com.

“If you don’t check all your bills you’re leaving yourselves open to being taken advantage of,” he added.

Last week, the same price comparison firm suggested that there is a widespread ignorance among UK consumers of the importance of checking their credit reports to make sure small debts are causing big financial problems.
