Consumers ‘will gain from energy prices war’

People in the UK could reap the benefits of an energy price war between suppliers, one expert has suggested.

Will Marples, energy expert at uSwitch.com, said the online battle for better prices is “hotting up”, with many utilities companies bringing down their charges.

He remarked: “The average standard plan is £1,239 a year while the average online plan is now £1,025 a year – this is an easy saving of £214 a year for the average household.”

His comments come after Eon revealed a new online energy tariff, which makes the organisation the second-cheapest provider in the UK, behind only EDF energy.

British Gas – now in third place for prices – is expected to lower the charges on its products further in efforts to remain competitive.

According to uSwitch, there are currently 4.6 million households in Britain on fixed energy plans.

Alison Morrison of free independent service Which? Switch recently said now is the right time for many consumers to consider switching their tariff to make savings.
